Can You Get a Spray Tan With Sunburn?

If you’ve been in the sun before your spray tan appointment, you might be wondering whether your treatment can still go ahead. Unfortunately, applying a spray tan over sunburn is a big no-no here at The Tan Boutique.

Sunburn means your skin has been damaged by excessive UV exposure. It may feel hot, sore or sensitive and can begin to peel several days later. Spraying tanning solution onto skin in this condition could cause further irritation and is unlikely to produce the smooth, even finish you want.

For your skin’s comfort and the quality of your results, it is best to postpone your appointment until the affected area has fully healed.

Why Healthy Skin Is Essential for a Flawless Spray Tan

Proper skin prep gives your spray tan a smooth, hydrated surface to develop on. That is why we provide every client with detailed spray tan preparation advice before their appointment.

Even the best tanning solution cannot produce flawless results if the skin underneath is damaged, irritated or peeling. A healthy base helps your tan to:

  • Develop more evenly
  • Look smoother and more natural
  • Avoid dark or patchy areas
  • Fade gradually and evenly
  • Last as long as possible

Whether your spray tan is for a wedding, holiday, special occasion or weekend away, preparation can make all the difference.

What Happens If You Apply Spray Tan Over Sunburn?

Sunburned skin goes through several stages, and none of them creates a suitable base for a spray tan.

Your Skin May Be Hot and Sensitive

Fresh sunburn can feel hot, tight, sore and painful to touch. Applying spray tan solution to already sensitive skin may feel uncomfortable and could increase irritation.

Redness may also affect how the finished colour appears. Although a spray tan can add temporary colour, it cannot conceal or repair damaged skin.

The Tan May Develop Unevenly

Sunburn does not always affect every area of the body equally. Some patches may be drier or more inflamed than others, causing the tanning solution to absorb unevenly.

This can leave the tan looking blotchy, streaky or darker in certain places from the moment it develops.

Peeling Skin Will Create a Patchy Tan

Peeling commonly begins a few days after sunburn. When the damaged skin starts to shed, any spray tan sitting on its surface will come away with it.

Even if your tan initially looks acceptable, peeling can quickly leave you with uneven colour and noticeable patches that are difficult to correct. Exfoliating the area while it is still healing may also further aggravate the skin.

How Long Should You Wait After Sunburn Before Getting a Spray Tan?

There is no single waiting period that works for everyone. Mild sunburn may improve within approximately seven days, while more significant sunburn can take longer to heal.

Do not book your spray tan based on the number of days that have passed. Instead, wait until:

  • There is no redness or unusual warmth
  • Your skin no longer feels sore or sensitive
  • Any blisters have completely healed
  • Your skin has stopped flaking or peeling
  • The affected area feels fully recovered

If you are unsure, contact us before your appointment. We would much rather help you rearrange your booking than apply a tan that may irritate your skin or produce disappointing results.

Seek medical advice if your sunburn is severe, blistered or swollen, or if you feel unwell. The NHS sunburn guidance provides advice on treating sunburn and explains when to contact NHS 111.

How to Care for Sunburned Skin

While your skin is healing, treat it gently. The NHS recommends cooling the skin with a cool shower, bath or damp towel and using an unperfumed moisturiser or aftersun product.

You should also:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Keep sunburned skin covered and away from direct sunlight
  • Avoid scratching or removing peeling skin
  • Avoid exfoliating until the area has fully healed
  • Never pop sunburn blisters
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing over sensitive areas

Once your skin has completely recovered, you can return to your usual spray tan preparation routine.

Prevent Sunburn Before Your Spray Tan

The simplest way to prevent a cancelled appointment is to protect your skin whenever you are outdoors. Use a suitable broad-spectrum sunscreen, follow the product instructions and reapply it regularly—particularly after swimming, sweating or towel drying.

Remember that a spray tan only adds temporary colour. It does not protect against the sun, so you will still need to use sunscreen after your appointment.

Let Your Skin Heal Before Booking Your Glow

We never enjoy turning a client away, especially when they have an important occasion coming up. However, your skin’s health must always come first.

If you arrive with active sunburn, peeling or significant irritation, we may need to postpone your treatment. Waiting until your skin has fully recovered gives us the healthy, smooth base we need to create a beautiful, even result.

Protect your skin, follow your preparation advice and let us give you the flawless, sunburn-free glow you deserve.

Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can fake tan cover sunburn?

A spray tan may temporarily darken the skin, but it will not heal sunburn or reliably disguise redness. Because sunburned skin can be dry, inflamed and uneven, the colour is likely to develop patchily.

2) Can I spray tan over peeling skin?

No. Spray tan sits on the outermost layer of the skin, so it will come away as the skin peels. Wait until all peeling has stopped and the area has completely healed.

3) Can I exfoliate sunburn before my spray tan?

Do not exfoliate sunburned or peeling skin. Scrubbing could cause further irritation and interfere with the natural healing process.

4) Should I cancel my spray tan if I am sunburned?

Contact your tanning salon before attending. At The Tan Boutique, we recommend postponing your treatment until the sunburn has fully healed and your skin is no longer red, sore, sensitive or peeling.
