How to Prepare for a Spray Tan: Why Prep Really Matters

We get it—life is busy, and preparing for your spray tan can easily slip your mind. But if you want a smooth, even and long-lasting glow, your preparation really does matter.

Your spray tan will only be as good as the skin underneath. Dry patches, leftover products and last-minute hair removal can all affect how the tanning solution develops and fades.

Think of it like baking a cake: you wouldn’t skip half the ingredients and still expect a perfect result. The same applies to your tan!

We often hear:

“Sorry, I put on a little moisturiser because my skin felt dry.”

“I had to wear deodorant this morning for work.”

We completely understand—life happens! However, even small amounts of product can create a barrier between your skin and the tanning solution. A little preparation before your appointment can make a huge difference to the finished result.

Here is how to prepare for a spray tan and give your skin the best chance of achieving a flawless glow.

1. Exfoliate Before Your Spray Tan

Exfoliation is one of the most important parts of spray tan preparation. It removes dead skin cells and old product residue, creating a smooth surface for your tan.

For the best results, exfoliate around 24 hours before your appointment. Pay particular attention to areas that are naturally drier or rougher, including:

  • Elbows
  • Knees
  • Ankles
  • Wrists
  • Hands
  • Feet

Use a gentle, oil-free exfoliator or exfoliating mitt. Avoid harsh scrubbing right before your appointment, as it can leave your skin sensitive.

Proper exfoliation helps your spray tan develop evenly and fade more naturally, reducing the risk of streaks and patchy areas.

2. Arrive with Clean, Product-Free Skin

Please arrive at your spray tan appointment with clean, dry skin and no:

  • Moisturiser
  • Deodorant
  • Perfume
  • Body oil
  • Makeup
  • SPF

These products can sit on the surface of your skin and prevent the tanning solution from developing evenly. Deodorant residue can also react with spray tan solution and occasionally cause temporary discolouration around the underarms.

Moisturise regularly in the days before your appointment, especially if your skin is dry. However, avoid applying moisturiser on the day of your tan unless your tanning specialist advises otherwise.

If you need to wear deodorant or makeup during the day, don’t panic. Simply remove it thoroughly before your appointment.

3. Shave or Wax in Advance

Shave or wax at least 24 hours before your spray tan. If you have particularly sensitive skin or are having an area waxed, leaving up to 48 hours may be better.

Shaving and waxing right before an appointment can leave your skin sensitive and your pores more noticeable. Some shaving products and waxes can also leave behind residue that affects how the tan sits on your skin.

Allowing enough time between hair removal and your appointment gives your skin an opportunity to settle. This helps reduce uneven patches, visible dots, and the effect sometimes described as “strawberry legs”.

4. Don’t Apply a Spray Tan Over Sunburn

SPF is essential whenever your skin is exposed to the sun. However, remove it thoroughly before your spray tan appointment so it doesn’t create a barrier on the skin.

If your skin is red, sore, peeling, or sunburnt, you’ll need to rearrange your appointment. Applying spray tan over damaged skin can create an uneven result, and the colour is likely to become patchy as the skin peels.

Always give your skin enough time to recover fully before having a spray tan.

5. Wear Loose, Dark Clothing Afterwards

Your preparation doesn’t stop when your appointment finishes. Bring loose, dark clothing to wear while your spray tan develops.

Avoid tight waistbands, leggings, bras, socks and restrictive shoes where possible, as friction and sweating can disturb the developing solution. Loose clothing helps protect your fresh tan and reduces the chance of marks or uneven areas.

Your tanning specialist will let you know how long to leave the solution on before showering, as the recommended development time can vary.
