Tanning Nasal Sprays and Injections: Why You Should Avoid Illegal Tanning Products

Your Glow Should Never Be a Gamble

When you want to build a tan, products promising faster or darker results can sound tempting. However, tanning nasal sprays, tanning injections, and products containing Melanotan are not safe shortcuts.

These products are not licensed for cosmetic tanning in the UK. Because they haven’t been properly regulated or approved, there is no reliable way to know exactly what they contain, how strong they are, or how your body might react.

At The Tan Boutique, we believe you should always know what you are putting on—or into—your body. Here is why you should avoid illegal tanning products and choose a more responsible way to achieve your glow.

What Are Tanning Nasal Sprays and Injections?

Illegal tanning products are commonly advertised online as:

  • Tanning nasal sprays
  • Melanotan nasal sprays
  • Tanning injections
  • Melanotan injections
  • Tanning drops
  • Injectable tanning pens

Many claim to contain Melanotan I or Melanotan II, synthetic substances designed to stimulate melanin production—the pigment that gives skin its colour.

Despite the convincing packaging and dramatic social media transformations, these products are not licensed medicines or approved cosmetic tanning treatments in the UK. Buying them from an attractive website or popular influencer does not make them safe.

Why Are Melanotan Products Dangerous?

1. You Cannot Be Certain What They Contain

Unregulated products do not undergo the same quality, safety, and manufacturing checks as licensed medicines or compliant cosmetics.

This means there may be no guarantee that the product:

  • Contains the ingredients shown on its label
  • Has been manufactured hygienically
  • Contains a consistent dose
  • Is free from contamination
  • Has been stored or transported correctly

A nasal spray or vial may look professionally made, but appearance alone tells you nothing about its safety.

2. They Can Cause Unwanted Side Effects

Reported side effects associated with Melanotan products include:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Facial flushing
  • Reduced appetite
  • Changes in blood pressure
  • Darkening of freckles and moles
  • The appearance of new or changing pigmented marks
  • Unexpected or prolonged erections in men

The long-term effects of using these unlicensed products are not fully understood. If you notice a new mole or a change in the size, shape or colour of an existing mole, seek advice from your GP.

3. Nasal Sprays Are Not Harmless

A tanning nasal spray may seem less intimidating than an injection, but that doesn’t make it safe. Substances absorbed through the nasal lining can enter the body quickly.

Because the ingredients and strength may be unknown, using a nasal tanning spray can cause unpredictable reactions. It may also irritate the nose and respiratory passages.

4. Injections Carry Additional Risks

Injecting an unlicensed substance brings further dangers. Poor-quality equipment, contaminated products or incorrect injection techniques can lead to:

  • Infection
  • Swelling and inflammation
  • Abscesses
  • Scarring
  • Damage around the injection site
  • Transmission of blood-borne infections if needles are shared

Tanning injections bought online are not the same as medicines prescribed and administered in a regulated medical setting.

Do Tanning Nasal Sprays Work Without UV Exposure?

Some Melanotan sellers suggest that their products offer an effortless or “sunless” tan. However, users are often encouraged to combine them with sunbeds or sunlight.

This creates two separate concerns: the unknown risks of an unlicensed product and the established risks of UV exposure.

No nasal spray, injection, lotion or supplement makes UV exposure risk-free. A developing tan also does not adequately protect against sunburn or skin damage.

Tanning Lotions Are Not the Same as Tanning Injections

Professional tanning lotions are topical cosmetic products applied to the skin’s surface. They should not be confused with nasal sprays, injectable products or Melanotan.

A suitable indoor tanning lotion can help keep the skin moisturised and may improve the appearance and longevity of your tan. However, tanning lotion is not sunscreen and does not remove the risks associated with UV exposure.

Always choose a reputable product, follow its instructions, and ask a trained member of staff if you are unsure which lotion suits your skin.

Safer Alternatives to Illegal Tanning Products

You do not need an unlicensed nasal spray or injection to achieve a bronzed appearance. Alternatives include:

Professional Spray Tans

A spray tan colours the outermost layer of the skin without requiring UV exposure. It is an ideal choice when you want quick, customisable colour for a holiday, event or confidence boost.

Gradual Tanning Products

Gradual tans allow you to build your desired colour over several applications. They are a useful option for maintaining a subtle glow at home.

Responsible Sunbed Use

No form of UV tanning is completely safe. If you choose to use a sunbed, follow professional guidance, use an appropriate session time for your skin type and never exceed the recommended exposure.

Do not use a sunbed if you are under 18, have very fair skin that burns easily, take medication that increases sensitivity to light or have been advised to avoid UV exposure.

Have You Already Used a Tanning Nasal Spray or Injection?

Stop using the product and speak to a pharmacist, GP or NHS 111 if you feel unwell or are worried about a reaction.

Seek urgent medical assistance if you experience serious symptoms such as difficulty breathing, severe swelling, chest pain, fainting or signs of a serious infection. You should also arrange a medical assessment if you notice a new or changing mole or unusual pigmentation.

Choose Your Tan—Without the Dangerous Shortcut

A fast tan is never worth gambling with an unknown substance. Tanning nasal sprays and Melanotan injections are unlicensed, unregulated and capable of causing unpredictable side effects.

Ignore social media hype, avoid products that make unrealistic promises and never inject or inhale a substance simply because it is marketed as a tanning aid.

If you want a glow without UV exposure, choose a professional spray tan. If you decide to use a sunbed, speak to our trained team so we can help you understand your skin type and follow a responsible tanning routine.

At The Tan Boutique, your wellbeing will always come before a tanning trend.
