Have you ever wondered why some people develop a tan easily while others seem to burn almost immediately? The answer partly comes down to your natural skin type and how much melanin your skin has.
The Fitzpatrick Skin Type Scale groups skin into six types according to how it typically responds to ultraviolet (UV) exposure. Understanding your Fitzpatrick skin type can help you recognise your sunburn risk and make better-informed decisions about tanning and sun protection.
However, the scale is only a guide. It does not make UV tanning safe, and you should never use your skin type to calculate your sunbed exposure time.
What Is the Fitzpatrick Skin Type Scale?
The Fitzpatrick scale describes how different skin types respond to UV exposure. It considers factors such as:
- Your natural, untanned skin colour
- How easily you burn
- How easily you develop a tan
- Your natural hair and eye colour
- Whether you have freckles
The way your skin reacts to the sun is usually more useful than appearance alone. Two people who look similar may still respond very differently to UV exposure.
Here is a simple guide to the six Fitzpatrick skin types.
Fitzpatrick Skin Type I: Very Fair Skin
Common characteristics:
- Very fair or pale skin
- Red or light-blonde hair
- Blue, grey or green eyes
- Freckles may be present
Typical response to UV: Always burns and does not develop a natural tan.
People with Type I skin are especially vulnerable to sunburn and UV damage. If this sounds like you, UV sunbeds are not a suitable tanning option. A professional spray tan or self-tanning product can provide colour without exposing your skin to harmful UV radiation.
SPF, protective clothing and shade are particularly important when spending time outdoors.
Fitzpatrick Skin Type II: Fair Skin
Common characteristics:
- Fair or light skin
- Blonde or light-brown hair
- Light-coloured eyes
- Some freckles may be present
Typical response to UV: Usually burns and may develop a light tan with difficulty.
Type II skin has a high risk of burning and remains particularly sensitive to UV exposure. Even if your skin eventually develops some colour, that does not mean it is protected from damage.
People with fair or sensitive skin are advised not to use sunbeds. If you would like a deeper, more even colour, a customised spray tan is the safer choice.
Fitzpatrick Skin Type III: Light to Medium Skin
Common characteristics:
- Light to medium skin
- Dark-blonde or brown hair
- Hazel or brown eyes
Typical response to UV: May burn initially but can gradually develop a tan.
Type III skin often tans more easily than Types I and II, but it can still burn and experience long-term UV damage. Developing a tan does not mean your skin is protected; it is a response to UV exposure.
If you are considering a sunbed, speak to trained salon staff and disclose any medication, skin conditions or previous reactions before using the equipment. Never attempt to choose or increase your own exposure time.
Fitzpatrick Skin Type IV: Olive or Light-Brown Skin
Common characteristics:
- Olive or light-brown skin
- Dark-brown hair
- Brown eyes
Typical response to UV: Rarely burns and usually develops a tan relatively easily.
Although Type IV skin contains more melanin, it can still be damaged by UV radiation. A lower tendency to burn does not mean repeated sunbed use is harmless.
Continue to use appropriate sun protection outdoors and never use your ability to tan as a reason to ignore redness, tenderness or changes to your skin.
Fitzpatrick Skin Type V: Brown Skin
Common characteristics:
- Brown or dark-brown skin
- Dark-brown or black hair
- Dark eyes
Typical response to UV: Burns infrequently and develops deeper pigmentation easily..
UV exposure can also contribute to uneven pigmentation and dark marks. Spray tanning remains the safer way to change or enhance your skin tone without UV exposure.
Fitzpatrick Skin Type VI: Deeply Pigmented Skin
Common characteristics:
- Deep-brown to black skin
- Black hair
- Dark-brown eyes
Typical response to UV: Burns very rarely and may become more deeply pigmented.
The greater amount of melanin in Type VI skin provides more natural protection, but it does not block all UV radiation. People with deeply pigmented skin can still experience sun damage.
Changes can sometimes be less noticeable on darker skin, so always have new, changing, or unusual marks checked by a qualified healthcare professional.
Can the Fitzpatrick Scale Determine a Safe Sunbed Time?
No. Your Fitzpatrick skin type may help identify how likely you are to burn, but it cannot provide a guaranteed safe sunbed exposure time.
Appropriate exposure will also be affected by:
- The strength and condition of the tanning equipment
- Previous UV exposure
- Medication that increases light sensitivity
- Skin conditions
- Recent sunburn or tanning
- Individual sensitivity to UV radiation
When Should You Avoid Sunbeds?
You should not use a sunbed if you:
- Are under 18
- Have very fair or sensitive skin
- Burn easily or do not tan
- Have a personal history of skin cancer
- Have lots of moles or freckles
- Have recently experienced sunburn
- Are taking medication that increases sensitivity to light
- Have been advised to avoid UV exposure by a medical professional
If you are unsure whether a health condition or medication affects your skin’s sensitivity, speak to your GP or pharmacist before tanning.
A Spray Tan Is the Safer Way to Glow
Whether you have very fair skin or a naturally deeper complexion, you do not need UV exposure to achieve an even, sun-kissed finish.
At The Tan Boutique, we can help you choose a professional spray tan that complements your natural skin tone. From a subtle golden colour to a deeper olive finish, you can customise your tan without exposing your skin to UV radiation.
Know Your Skin and Protect It
The Fitzpatrick scale is a useful way to understand how your skin may react to the sun, but it should not be treated as a tanning timetable.
Every skin type can experience UV damage. Keep using SPF outdoors, avoid burning, and seek professional advice if you notice a new or changing mole or an unusual mark on your skin.
